Sepsis threatens the lives of up to 30 million people each year worldwide. Inappropriate or delayed treatment allows for disease progression to septic shock and as many as 9 million deaths per year. Recent efforts to reduce mortality have focused on generating definitions of sepsis and related conditions and establishing guidelines for identification and implementation of goal-directed (individualized) therapy. Despite this, the incidence of sepsis has increased significantly in the US with hospitalizations and related costs doubling over the last 10 years.
Rapid diagnosis of sepsis is paramount to reduce mortality. This webinar will summarize current guidelines for sepsis diagnosis and management with a focus on the role of clinical laboratory testing including lactate. It will discuss the utility of lactate and other biomarkers in both diagnosis and monitoring of sepsis, including the pre-analytical and analytical requirements for accurate testing. The webinar will also include a brief discussion of the most promising emerging biomarkers and diagnostic strategies in sepsis.
About the presenter
Dr. Alison Woodworth is currently Professor of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at the University of Kentucky Medical Center. Where she is also Medical Director of the Core Clinical Laboratory and Point of Care testing. Along with her clinical service, Dr. Woodworth serves as co-chair of the Laboratory Formulary Committee at the UK Medical Center. She is a Diplomate of the American Board of Clinical Chemistry and currently serves as a director on the ABCC exam committee and Vice President of the credentialing committee.
She is actively involved in teaching – having taught pathology residents, medical students, medical technologists, and endocrinology and maternal fetal medicine fellows. She is also director of the COMACC certified clinical chemistry fellowship training program at the University of Kentucky. Dr. Woodworth has been actively involved in numerous organizations including the American Association for Clinical Chemistry (AACC) where her service on numerous local and national committees including on the AACC Academy Board of Directors, Nominating Committee, Chair of the Pediatric/Maternal Fetal Medicine Division, and the Science and Practice Core Committee earned her the SYCL Service award. She also serves on executive council of the Academy of Clinical Laboratory Physician Scientists (ACLPS).
Dr. Woodworth is actively involved in clinical/translational research and her noteworthy contributions in the areas of laboratory test utilization, sepsis, endocrinology, and Maternal/Fetal Medicine have resulted in multiple publications and awards.
